VIRATHA – POOJA
(PRAYERS & FASTING)
 
          In the customs of Hindus the specific Poojas were followed with fastings. Every month that also as per lunar month, the prayers were continued by our forefathers. The days of pooja will be in the period of waning and waxing of moon. Previous generation counted the days as per the waxing period fourteen days and waning period fourteen days. So, the lunar month is twenty eight days only.
 
  The specific crescent moon day the particular poojas (prayers) were celebrated.
 
  The important days are commonly selected and worshiped. They are
 
A) Pradosham
B) Krithika
C) Ekadashi
D) Naga Panchami
E) Shasty
F) Gokulastami
G) Khetharachva Virtham
H) Chadurthi
I) Amavashiya
J) Powrnami
K) Dhasami
L) Shiv Rathri
M) Sri Rama Navami
 
PRADOSHAM
 
       Lord Shiva blessed the whole world and community by swallowing the pois. The Hindu mythology explains that on the occasion of churning Amritha Nectar the divinly Prasad of sacred liquid which gives an everlasting life to those who drink it. The vast milky ocean when the divines and giants churned for Amritha, the snake Vasuki was used as rope duly circled on Manthara giri (A big mount used as churner). The task was big and great. The snake felt the tediousness and discharged the venam (poison) which
ofcourse highly poisonous to destroy the whole world. The Divines prayed for the help of Lord Shiva, who blessed and swallowed the poison. Thus the great escape was rendered upon the world which was saved from great danger.
 
     This is the event honoured and worshiped in respect of adoring the Lord Shiva. Every month this pooja will come.
 
         Those who worship and do this pooja will be getting the blessings of Shiva and get relieved of troubles.
  
KRITHIKA
  
   The star day “KRITHIKA” in every month is a sacred day to honour the Lord KARTHIKEYA who is commonly called as Sri Muruga. The atrocities and attack of Giant Soorapadma was put to an end by Karthikeya, the son of Lord Shiva. People use to worship Lord Muruga on this day and get the blessings Lord Muruga will show grace for all the humans and rescue from calamities.
 
EKADESHI
 
       This particular day is honoured for Lord MahaVishnu. This is explaining the 11th day of crescent moon. Das is Ten and Eka is one so it is Ekadashi. The people will be worshiping the Lord and do pooja with fastings. All the prosperity and wealth will be blessed by Lord Mahavishnu. The beneficiaries are those who continuously do this Pooja with fastings.
 
NAGAPANCHAMI
 
        This pooja will come in Karthigai (November end or in beginning of December). Those who are suffering from ill health, allergy and poisonous disease will have the cure when they worship Goddess Naga Devatha with fastings.Ultimately she blesses the devotees to be with prosperity.
 
SHASTY
 
          This Pooja is also for Lord Karthikeya who blesses his devotees on Skantha Sasty. The theme is this that the Lord destroys the evil. He blesses the whole world and people from the clutches of demons and devils. He comes out victoriously. The devotees when worship Lord Karthikeya the rewards of improvement, relief in trouble and success will reach one and all.
 
GOKULASTAMI
 
       Lord Mahavishnu as Sri Krishna born and killed his uncle “Kamsa”. Gokulam is the place where Sri Krishna grown up and played with all his friends and devotees.
 
        Kamsa was a demon king who created lot of troubles, unjustice and killing of people. So, Lord Mahavishnu born as a child to his sister and destroyed him after a great battle.
 
        Worship to Lord Krishna on his birth day “Astami” will give courage, happiness and prosperity.
 
 CHADURTHI
 
          This means four. The lumar 4th day in waning period the Lord Vigenshwara. shows his grace and blessings to the human community. The devotees worship him and gain education, will power, and prosperity. Lord Vigneshwara is considered as first and formost God to commence all good festivals and poojas. This pooja comes either in end of August or in the beginning of September.
 
SANGADA HARA CHADURTHI
 
          In Chadurthi days, so many good happenings are notified. The meaning for “Sangada” is really link with sarrow any worry. Let it be either in high or low digree. when we attend the Sangada Hara Chadurthi, the divinely helps and supports will reach and the people will feel the change and thus the worries will vanish.
 
 
NARAGA CHADUR DASI
 
          Every year the festival Deepavali comes in between end of October and beginning of November.
 
          On that Deepavali day Lord Krishna kills a Demon “Naraga Asura”
       
          Lord Krishna and Goddess Satyabama in a battle field with Naraga Asura put an end to his life and rescue the world from his horrible misrule. As per the Asura’s request the Day is celebrated on his name “Naraga Chadur Desi”. The boon was granted to him and he was given the eternity also. “Swarga” gives the meaning for Gods lotus feet.
 
         If one happens to reach there that is eternity. There is no further birth. Since this day is ment for great clashes and war affairs, the crackers and fire works are merited in this festival.    
 
AMAVASHYA
 
     For all in earth this day in most effective since Sun God and Moon God come together and bless the world. All good beginnings and new jobs can be commenced with the blessings of Sun and Moon.
 
      There is exception for this Particular new moon day. Even if the day is not good and inauspicious some times, we can carry out the job because the grace of Sun and Moon unitedly reach the earth.
 
       One should practice to be in fasting and worship, such efforts will bring good results of success and prosperity.
  
POWRNAMI DAY
 
      This day is also most important as it full moon day. The brightness of moon reaches the world. On this day the Earth will be in between sun and moon. So, the earth is escorted with two divines on both sides.
 
        Many kind of pending affairs, and the dragged matters should reach a good position and get completed. The divinely helps and supports will reach and life will be with good tides and times for a great success.
 
        The worship to Lord Moon and Sun and all supreme Gods Mahavishnu and Maheswar will give good fruits in life.
 
KEDHARACHWAR VIRDHA
 
       This day will be next day to Deepavali and will be a new moon day also.
 
        Goddess Gowri and Lord Maheswar are the deities for prominent worship. The human community and devotees who show a deep worship will be blessed with all kind of properties and wealth.
 
         Every year this should be continued with out break. God’s blessings will flow with abundance.
 
DASAMI
           
         This is 10th day of Lunar month. For great power and progress “Vijaya Dasami” is worshipped. God vigneshwar, Goddess Maha Lakshmi and Goddess Saraswathi are unitedly shower the blessings and graces on this day.
 
        The Durga Pooja is also combined here and the worship for Goddess Durga will boost the human society for a glorious future.
 
SHIV RATHRI
 
      This festival comes to honour the Lord Shiva. This will be in the end of February or in beginning of March. The Almighty Shiva is prayed all over the world for his blessing and grace.
 
      Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma are the supreme Gods. They unitedly grace the world as “Theen Moorthi”. The devotees keep them selves in fasting for almost all over the day and worship. The great honour to the creator, if we do, we can achieve all kind of earthly pleasures and happiness and also the heavenly abode.
 
SRI RAMA NAVAMI
 
       Lord Mahavishnu as Sri Krishna, Sri Vamana, and Sri Rama presented himself in Ten Avatharas (Dasa Avathar). In all his ten Births, he destroyed the evils and planted the peace and happiness.
 
       One among the Ten is Sri Rama Avathar. The birth day was navami (9th day of Lunar month). It is celebrated very grandly and the blessings of Lord Rama promote the human lives for prosperity and peace.
 
SATHYANARAYANA POOJA
 
       This is a humble worship with fastings. Lord Maha Vishnu is the deity here to be adorned with honour and devotion.
 
       When this pooja is done with proper manner the devotees will be blessed with good future with peace and prosperity.
 
        This pooja we can do on any day. The dhana (feeding to poor) and donating saree, and cloths to the nearest will be highly rewardable.
